Plastic bag of books in hand, Bella made her way through the now dark streets of Port Angeles. She didn't realize how much time she had spent in that tiny hole in the wall bookstore, but the sun was now long gone. Pulling her cell phone out of her pocket she glanced at the screen quickly. That too was black. Telling her the battery was dead.
'Crap,' she thought to herself, eyes darting around to check her surroundings. Charlie would be furious if he found out she was roaming the streets alone in a foreign part of town. 'At least it's not Seattle.'
Picking up pace, she shuffled along the sidewalk, trying to remember the way she had come. It was a lot different in the dark. Storefronts were beginning to look the same. Trying to quell her panic she urged her feet to move faster without causing her to trip. With her nose down as she made her way across a parking lot, she didn't even notice the group of guys several feet in front of her until it was too late.
"Hey, pretty lady, what are you doing out here all alone?" A large, dark haired man called out to her. Bella's eyes shot up, taking in their appearances. There were three off them. The dark haired man that yelled at her was the largest. His beer belly hung over his pants and he wore a stained t-shirt. The other two were equally as appalling.
Trying to ignore them Bella continued on, making sure to distance herself from them as much as possible. But, they were having none of it. They moved toward her, sneering and checking her out as they moved closer to surround her.
"Aw, come on, don't walk away from us," Beer-belly huffed, stepping in front of her. The other two stood behind her, successfully cornering her. Bella's heart raced and her breathing came in short bursts as she tried not to panic. What had Charlie taught her about self-defense? Eyes, throat, groin. Eyes, throat, groin.
One of the two behind her reached out, touching her shoulder. Whipping around Bella smacked his hand away.
"Don't touch me," she snapped. She meant for her voice to come off strong and forceful. But, it was just a whisper, her fear quickly consuming her. Her reaction to them just seemed to fuel them and push them toward her.
"Don't be like that, sweets," he laughed, reaching out to brush her cheek. Bella gritted her teeth, closing her eyes and tried to pull away from his touch.
Bella desperately hoped that her friends were looking for her right now. That Jessica and Angela would round the corner at the end of the street and put an end to the hell these random men were putting her through. She promised herself that if she made it out of this alive she would be smarter and carry a weapon or something with her.
Clenching her eyes tighter she willed the men to just leave her alone.
